What Our Students Say About Us
I went to visit CR for thanksgiving with my family. I was planning on moving around and visiting all the beaches near Tamarindo. But when I got to Avellanas surf school, I couldn’t really leave. We surfed for 5 days non stop. We had fun, and we found a very professional and passionate bunch of instructors. But most of all, we found outstanding and unforgettable persons that made us willing to come back! Thanks u all!!!

Surfing is something I’ve always wanted to try but was too hesitant to actually do. My experience with Mauricio was fulfilling beyond my expectations, from his welcoming attitude, his charisma and obvious surfing knowledge; Mauricio made me feel confident, safe and enthusiastic.
I honestly felt like I was visiting an old friend although I had never met Mauricio, I cannot say enough to recommend these guys. Also very important, the location is iconic in the surfing community for those who have surfed in Costa Rica as I have found out after posting about it on social media. Mauricio, The environment, the location, the people, etc.. go to Avellanas and find Mauricio if you are looking for an espectacular experience surfing.

Toronto
This is a great place to learn how to surf! The owner Mauricio is very friendly and helpful. Easy to book and pay through PayPal. I did a couple of group lessons with Elmer. Elmer is an awesome instructor, super nice guy, and he will help you catch some tasty waves. The lessons last about an hour and half. I think I’m a surfer now…thanks for a great experience Elmer!

Your Family's Safety Is First
We advise you to do your research and take your families safety very seriously.
La Purruja
The first is a reef break called “La Purruja”. It is named after the original small bar where Lolas is currently located. The surf spot is to the left to the parking lot. It can be a world class wave with the right size and wave direction. In fact, a challenge for most intermediate level surfers. A must for advanced level surfers.
Lolas
In front of Lolas Restaurant in Avellanas you will find a beach break where you will find most of the locals surfing because it is insanely fun! In front of Lolas Restaurant there is a sandbar that has some great rights and lefts (Sometimes great A frames).
Las Olas
Right next to Lolas, theres another break called Las Olas. It’s name is because right at the entrance is the main road to a Hotel called Las Olas where you can algo get a nice meal and some refreshing cocktails or drinks at its open style restaurant. The most beautiful way to get there is by walking the wooden bridge which extends through the mangrove in Avellanas. Its a signature place for taking pictures.
Palo Seco
If you keep taking more steps you will find the next spot called Palo Seco (Dead Tree). Its is a smooth wave settle in an awesome sand bar that also breaks both ways (left and right) for those that are learning to surf or at a basic level. Ideally for kids…
El Estero
The Estero (River Mouth) if you continue walking north you will encounter “The Estero” which is a river mouth break and great for advanced surfers. The wave is a perfect A frame where it barrels like no other place in Playa Avellanas. It is mostly for advanced surfers, and requires enough experience because there is an exposed reef.
Pequeño Hawaii
Lastly once you cross the river mouth you will get to “Little Hawaii”. This wave is a dream come true. It is for advanced level surfers that love to rip hard. Great point break that breaks to the right and it can handle up to a triple overhead swell.
The Secret Spot
We wont tell you the name for obvious reasons. This seventh break is kept private for locals, close friends and acquaintances. International visitors hardly get the chance to see this wave. They have no idea that a reef break that can manage “Perfect Waves”, “Big Swells” and can be accessed via boat or a 20 minute paddle out. When the conditions come together, this wave is world class, for sure one of the best surf spots in Costa Rica.
