Your family’s safety is first!

Our Knowledge to Provide Security

We know the risk and the care necessary to protect you and your family.

Safety is the Priority

Your Safety is First

Surfing carries some risks, but these are minimized when your skill level matches the conditions. While safety theory can be learned through reading, only experience in the water builds accurate judgment. This is why guidance from an experienced surf instructor is essential.

Surf schools have grown rapidly in Costa Rica, especially in places like Playa Tamarindo. At Avellanas Surf School, with 10 years of experience, our local instructors combine expertise with a deep knowledge of surf breaks, currents, and reefs. We prioritize your family’s safety, ensuring you learn to surf in the best conditions while having fun.

What you could do before your surf holiday . . .

Prepare for your holiday by swimming, snorkeling, or skateboarding. Practice paddling on a surfboard in water to improve control. Being in better shape will enhance your surfing experience and safety.

New beaches are exciting but . . .

Before entering the water, know the shoreline, seabed, currents, sandbanks, and hazards. Be aware of ocean effects and emergency contacts. Never go where you can’t swim back without a surfboard, as the leash may break!

Before you start . . .

Before entering any beach, check the waves and your equipment:

– Currents, wave height, and set intervals.
– Other surfers’ actions.
– Shore break conditions.
– Leash, fins, and board wax.
– Appropriate suit, sun protection, and your physical/mental readiness for the conditions.

At last the water . . .

– Avoid going alone in dangerous conditions.
– In safe conditions, have someone watch from the beach.
– Always keep your board to your side, not between you and the wave.

At the peak . . . waiting for the waves . . .

– Watch the waves and check the shore for currents.
– Sit on your board when not paddling to spot waves early, be visible, and turn quickly.
